Headstand (sirsasana) is one of my favorite poses. It simultaneously energizes and calms the mind, strengthens the spine, legs, and arms, soothes and tones the abdomen, and is even known to alleviate depression. I find this pose to be so potent that if I am short on time and can’t fit in a full yoga practice, I simply do a headstand for a few minutes, followed by child’s pose.
Please do not try this posture without first receiving in-person instruction from a yoga teacher and permission from your doctor. Those who are new to headstand will practice against a wall.
