Magazine Revamps of Yoga Journal, SELF, & Runner’s World: Plus RW Video Fun with Personal Heroes

Tis the season of redesigning magazines. Perhaps you heard that Yoga Journal got a facelift, featuring Kathryn Budig on its cover this month. It’s enjoying buzz from the yoga set, largely because of Budig’s sincerity and openness about body image– the issue’s cover story. There’s also a formidable piece about the dark side of yoga by Chelsea Roff, with whom I had the pleasure of collaborating over at Intent.com, where she formerly hung her hat (yoga mat… you get the idea). I’m thrilled for her and to read the piece.

SELF magazine, too, is releasing a new look and feel in October, so I’m looking forward to the big reveal.  It’s a favorite gym read for me, helping to pass many an elliptical session with less drudgery and more workout ideas and healthy recipes.

But, without a doubt, the glossy pages closest to my heart are those of Runner’s World magazine, which also enjoys a sleeker update this month. (I subscribe to Vogue and Vanity Fair, too, and they’re kind of my lifeline to fashion and culture right now since I’ve been a semi-hibernating author for the past few months and without a TV for 2 years). I digress.

Never in my life have I experienced a magazine readership as rabid and dedicated as RW (and I previously worked in magazines). As the Runner’s World yoga expert, I am blown away daily by the engaged feedback, questions, comments, and Instagrams of people doing yoga in their homes with my videos on the Runner’s World website cued on laptop. Look, I’m with someone’s dog. My, that’s a lovely fireplace I’m cyber sitting on. And now to be featured in a fun video with some of my personal heroes to announce the revamp? Guys: Kara Goucher, Shalane Flanagan, and SUMMER SANDERS! Talk about a girl crush moment. Yikes… someone get me a cold glass of kale juice. Not to mention Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray doing the city proud with his bit from a lobster boat in Boston Harbor. Pardon me: lobstah boat in Boston Ha-bah.

I hope you like the video. Who were you most excited to see? What are your favorite magazines? And what do you think about the redesigns you’re seeing?
